1st Edition
Early LOB/MRD/SDK prints – the premier class in the vintage space.
Yu-Gi-Oh! cards have their own pitfalls – especially with surface and edges. In this guide you'll learn which cards are worth it, what to watch for with 1st Edition, Ghost and Ultimate Rares and how to avoid disappointment when grading.
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! space, 1st Edition classics from early sets (LOB, MRD, SDK) are especially sought after, as are rare Ghost Rares, Ultimate Rares and modern Starlight or Collector's Rares. The difference between 1st Edition and Unlimited can be decisive for value – so when sending in, note exactly which edition you own.
Early LOB/MRD/SDK prints – the premier class in the vintage space.
Rare special rarities with high collector value.
Embossed – ideal with a clean surface, but sensitive.
Modern chase cards whose value a top grade secures.
Embossed Ultimate Rares tend to develop fine scratches on the raised structures – move the card in the light before sending and check the surface carefully. Older cards often show edge wear and whitening at the corners, which noticeably lowers the grade. The centering was also frequently uneven in old prints.
Tip: foiled and embossed cards are sensitive to friction – store them individually in sleeves and avoid loose stacking. The four criteria we rate are explained in the guide Centering, Corners, Edges & Surface.
Before sending Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in, a thorough self-check pays off. First check the edition: a "1st Edition" print under the image often makes a big value difference to the Unlimited version. Then hold the card at an angle to the light and check the surface for fine scratches – especially on embossed Ultimate Rares. As your eye moves over the corners and edges, watch for whitening and wear, the typical weak points of older cards.
A common mistake is loosely stacking foiled cards – friction quickly causes micro-scratches that drag down the surface grade. So store valuable cards individually in sleeve and toploader. How to pack safely for shipping is shown in the guide Packing cards safely for grading.
