Every card is checked under controlled lighting and magnification for print image, dot pattern, colours, typography and feel.
Before every grade comes the authenticity check. This ensures that only genuine cards receive a grade and a seal. Here we explain step by step how PGS verifies authenticity – from visual inspection through UV-secured seals to verification via serial number and QR code.
Every card is checked under controlled lighting and magnification for print image, dot pattern, colours, typography and feel.
Layer structure, weight and light transmission (light test) reveal the typical features of genuine cards.
We compare against known references and draw on daily practice with counterfeit patterns across all TCGs.
Only genuine cards are sealed in the case with a tamper-proof, UV-secured label.
Every PGS slab carries a unique serial number and a QR code. Through these, the card can be verified in our database at any time – including grade and subgrades. So not only the owner but also any later buyer can independently verify the authenticity of the grade. This builds trust when buying and selling.
In addition, the public pop report transparently shows how often a given grade has been awarded for a card. This protects against manipulation and makes rarity traceable.
If a card turns out to be a counterfeit, it receives no grade and no seal. With proof of purchase you receive a written notice. This prevents fakes from gaining credibility through a PGS label – a key contribution to protecting the entire collector community. If you'd like a card checked before buying or selling without sealing it, use the authentication & value appraisal.
