Bends & pressure
The sturdy, hard case prevents bending and pressure marks that sleeves alone quickly allow.
A slab – the sealed protective case of a graded card – is far more than just looks. In this guide we explain what the slab protects your collectible cards from and why graded cards are therefore more value-stable and safer to store.
The sturdy, hard case prevents bending and pressure marks that sleeves alone quickly allow.
The card no longer touches anything directly – surface, corners and edges stay untouched.
The sealed case keeps out moisture and dirt that can permanently damage cards.
Protection against fading from sun and artificial light over the years.
A slab preserves the condition at the time of grading – the recorded grade stays traceable and is protected from later damage that would reduce value. In addition, every PGS slab carries a serial number with QR code and a tamper-proof label through which the grade can be verified at any time.
For buyers this means security, for sellers a clear advantage: a sealed, verifiable card builds trust and sells more transparently. How a card arrives at its grade is explained on subgrades and the grading scale.
Sleeve and toploader are good basic protection for everyday use and shipping – they prevent scratches and light bends. For valuable cards in longer storage, however, they reach their limits: sleeves can slip, release plasticisers or let moisture through, and toploaders offer no fully sealed, dimensionally stable protection. The slab, by contrast, encloses the card firmly and permanently – ideal as soon as value and protection needs increase.
For storage too: keep cards dark, dry and at a stable room temperature, avoid direct sun and store slabs upright or stacked flat. That preserves the conserved condition and keeps the documented grade reliable for years. How a card arrives at its grade is explained by subgrades and the grading scale; the complete workflow is shown on the grading process page.
